43 - Embudhoo Express

Special Feature: An exciting drift along the channel into the atoll. Great caves and overhangs at the entrance, the reef turns into a steep wall with a huge cave and a swim through all covered with pretty coral growth. The inward current brings in pelagic fish. Grey reef sharks are seen at the corner as well as barracudas and eagle rays. Gorgonians ands sponges with reef fish and moray eels meandering through them are a common sight near the caves.

42 - Embudhoo Canyon

Special Feature: A large chunk of rock looks to have fallen off the reef leaving a vast canyon 50 meters long with caves and overhangs. The dive can be started upcurrent from the canyon and drift in the deep blue waters of Vaadhoo Kandu before gliding into the narrow canyon at 20 meters. The coral growth is very good in this area because of the nutrient rich currents flowing all the time.

41 - Vaadhoo Caves

Special FeatureAn exciting dive along caves which start at 30m, all with beautiful hanging soft coral and some gorgonians. Excellent marine life, often including Napoleaon wrasse, eagle rays, tuna and big jacks as well as white tip reef sharks and turtles. On top of the reef big schools of fusiliers and oriental sweetlips are a common sight.

40 – Villigili Corner

The use of a moderate wide angle lens 20mm - 28mm is recommended for the cave, turtles, sharks and pelagics in blue water.

Special Feature: A typical outside reef with a steep drop at the beginning. It turns into a slope once you are around the corner. The reef has some small overhangs and a highly distinctive rock, pointing ahead like a finger. It makes a great landmark for navigation and is covered with soft and hard coral. The marine life is manifold with many a pelagic fish, reef fish and turtles.

39 - Kikki Reef

Special Feature: Drop-off with pretty overhangs from 30metres up to 8 metres. Mainly hard corals grow along the wall and the visibility is usually good. Pelagic fish like tuna are an equally frequent sight. The reef top provides a comfortable home for turtles which are often seen at the spot.

38 - Old Shark Point

Special Feature: The dive starts with a great rock formation at the corner of Thilafushi, an artificially reclaimed island. A great place to observe pelagic fish swimming in the blue water, move along the the wall which follows the rock to view beautiful overhangs covered with corals and crustacions. The great depth of the Vaadhoo Channel, which drops off to almost 500 metres contains mainly pelagic fish. The reef top, home to some turtles, is also an excellent spot for snorkellers.

37 - Lion’s Head

Special Feature: With an international reputation for encountering grey reef sharks, the Lions Head is a popular dive spot. Even with a new ban on shark feeding in the area, the chances of seeing these impressive predators patrolling the area are still vast. The reef is a steep wall plunging down to great depth hosting a large number of invertebrate life like the octopus and the lobster. The clear waters of the channel offer the chance to view pelagic fish while the reef top forms a great showcase for turtles.

36 - Giravaru Caves

Special Feature: Drop-of with big overhangs and caves. The inside of some caves offer fantastic views of the blue sea from inside them. Big schools of midnight snappers swim among the hard and soft corals and the gorgonians. Pelagic fish and eagle rays are also common in this area.

35 – Moon Valley

Special Feature: A very colourful drop off on the outside which changes into a slope with beautiful overhangs, Napoleon wrasses, eagle rays and reef sharks are a common sight. Schooling snappers, oriental sweetlips and an infinite number of fusiliers make this a rare and unique spot.

34 - Kuda Haa Tila

Special Feature: Reef formed by a narrow connection in-between two hemispheres. The big one ascends up to 7 metres while the small one ascends up to 12 metres. It is possible to swim along with thousands of small fish. The hard coral growth here is excellent and comes in numerous shapes and sizes. Decorated with colourful feather starters, turtles, nudibranches and gobies which populate the reef create the perfect picture for photographers.

33 - Black Coral Reef

Special Feature: The amazing abundance of fish at this site alone makes it worth your while to dive here. With the huge variety of reef dwelling species of fish, schools of batfish, barracudas, sharks and sometimes even sharks and turtles passing by you, it is easy to forget that the coral at this site are no longer in perfect condition.

31 - Rasfari

The use of a wide angle 14mm - 28mm is advised for the scenery, the sharks and other pelagics.

Special Feature: A long outside reef covered with pretty hard coral and some soft white sandy bays where white tip reef sharks come to have a little lie-down or shut-eye. Well off the main reef is another up coming reef (thila) with nice soft and hard corals. This reef drops off on its outside to over 40m and is a good place to encounter pelagic fish. Grey reef sharks are a common sight, and even oceanic white tip sharks have been spotted in the past. With eagle rays passing gently by every now and then, there is no doubt that you will have fantastic time diving at this spot.

30 - Bodu Hithi Thila

West side of the Atoll, in the channel to the outer reef.

Special Feature: The main attraction here are the manta rays seen from December to May. Getting a chance to have a look at these elegant creatures at close quarters is high, and the possibility exists of sighting a whale shark. The coral growth, however, is less remarkable, and we limit diving in this region to just during the manta season.

29 - Chicken Island

Special Feature: On the outside reef are coral rocks around 10 meters where many reef fish are found. A couple of caves at 20 meters. Then a long drift into the channel follows, until reaching an overhang spiraling down from 3 to 25 meters. The is the start of a 100 meter section of cliffs, caves, coral blocks and swim-throughs. Lots of soft coral growth underneath the over hangs.

28 - Colosseum

Special Feature: On the outside is a crescent shaped cliff, a great place to watch pelagic fish swimming by. The reef here drops down very steeply and is covered with hard coral. Inside the channel, the reef turns into a slope with nice soft coral. The marine life here is rich with pelagic species, sharks, eagle rays and all sorts of reef dwelling fishes.

27 - Palm Reef

26 - Aquarium

Special Feature: On the outside reef slightly to the northern corner is a group of coral blocks at 15m with masses of reef fish of every description, giving the site its name. On the sandy bottm at 25 – 30m are white-tip reef sharks and sting rays. And a couple of caves at 25m which is worth taking a look.

25 - Kani Corner

Special Feature: Kani Corner is one of the most exciting drift dives in the atoll. The outside reef bottoms onto a sandy slope at 30m. The corner of the channel is marked by a small ledge with a cave at 25m. Most of the action takes place at this area. Inside the channel the reef banks up to a sharp drop off between 5 and 20m with caves and overhangs down the face.

24 - Thanburudhoo Kandu

Special Feature: The inward current and good visibility makes this dive a delightful treat. It starts with a slope of either hard or soft corals, followed by a white sandy channel where eagle rays continue an ongoing search for crustacions. A number of reef formations, the centre of which is covered with beautiful soft corals. White tips rest here, nestles by the corals - creating an unforgettable landscape which gives a feeling of flying. The dive ends perfectly, in a shallow coral garden with bommies in white sand and many colourful reef fish.

23 – Illka Reef

22 - Farukolhu Haa

21 - Coral Garden

Special Feature: Excellent dive with a spectacular reef formation. The entire length of the reef on the south west side is filled with outcrops of reef, caves and crevices. The ceilings of the caves are covered with blue, yellow, red and green soft corals.

19 - Govagathi Tila

18 - Barracuda Giri

Special Feature: There are 3 sections of reef to this thila. The smallest being no more than 10m in diameter, while the larger one is about 50m in length. A hole in the larger one at 13m makes an ideal starting point from where the dhoni can secure a line. All 3 sections are pitted with nooks, crannies, steep ledges, overhangs and caves providing a veritable feast of marine life.

17 - Paradise Rock

Special Feature: Oval shape thila (submerged reef). The main attraction are several large pinnacles scattered randomly on the north east side of the thila. The pinnacles are exposed to the full force of the currents and the soft coral growth is spectacular. Over hangs and small crevices all around.

16 - Hudhuveli Outside

15 - Lankan Caves

Special Feature:
An extension of Lankan Reef, this site contains remarkable caves starting at 30m going up to 10m. Beautiful hard and soft coral as well as huge gorgonians decorate the caves and makes the perfect place to watch tunas, jacks, with occasional appearances by napoleons and turtles.

14 - Lankan Reef

Special Feature: Well known as Manta Point, this dive site remains to true to its namesake by providing a home to these impressive creatures of the sea. During the South West monsoon season (April - November), at south-east corner of the reef are where they weave their way through the waters gracefully. Even without the impressive manta rays and the great fish life, the reef will is a great place to dive. Beautiful soft and hard coral covers the steep slope and they alone are worth a dive at this spot.

13 - Potato Reef

East South-east off Bandos, near Maagiri Reef

This is a place for macro photographs. Use a 50mm - 100mm lens for the moray eels, stonefish and gobies.

Special Feature: Myriad of colour glaze this beautiful reef where the marine life is abundant. Only about 100m in diameter, it provides excellent opportunities for keen uw-photographers. The reef is covered mainly in hard coral and crustacions. Massive moray eels are found here, as well as the extremely rare ghost moray. The dense lionfish population is really amazing and if you have good eyes, this is your chance to spot some stonefish. Surrounded by soft white sand, the reef is home to innumerable garden eels.

12 - Maagiri East

11 - Maagiri Rock

Special Feature: After a free descent down to 20m stands a big rock of about 30m in diameter. All over the rock are delight hues of soft coral, bringing it to vibrant life. Big schools of yellow snappers adds another bright dash of colour as they swim among the corals. A mecca for every uw-photographer. Big grouper hide in some caves and numerous lionfish scale the area. The dive ends at Maagiri east reef near by.

10 - Maagiri Caves

09 - Kuda Banana Reef

08 - Banana Reef

Special Feature: Banana Reef, named after its shape when viewed from the air, was one of the first dive sites to be discovered in the Maldives. The best diving is at the north eastern end where there are big spectacular rocks, caves, deep gutters and overhangs covered with hard and soft corals. The scenery is amazing and around these big rocks, predatory fish like sharks, barracuda, trevally and black snappers converge.

07 - Chicken Pass

Excellent coral growth, schools of fusiliers, snappers, trevallys, barracuda, groupers.

Special Feature:
Maldive Victory sank in the early hours of Friday, February 13th 1981. The wreck lies upright, tilted slightly to the port in 35 meters of water. The ship is a 3500 tonne, 83 meter freighter. The entire ship can be seen in one dive. The cargo holds are open and easy to penetrate. You can also go inside the bridge.

Special Feature: Nice slope with mainly hard corals and, depending on the current, a quite good marine life. It is an easy dive site due to its natural protection from strong wind and therefore suitable for beginners. Turtles and reef dwelling fish are to find here, making this dive a nice relaxed afternoon stroll.
