Formed above peaks emerging from the depths of the ocean, upon layers of coral debris and living coral, and remnants of other marine life, these tropical islands are found forming the pearls of Indian ocean. Coconut palms tower above dense shrubs and hardy plants protect the shores from erosion and reefs guard as a barrier against the sea forming lagoons. Smaller islands and sandbanks under formation are also able to be perceived underwater.

Out of a total of 1190 islands in 26 natural atolls, 202 are inhabited, 100 are set aside for exclusive tourist resort development. Measuring 820 kilometres north to south and 120 kilometres east to west at its greatest width, the closest neighbours are India and Sri Lanka.

The climate of Maldives is warm year round, determined by the monsoons. However, being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and not as defined as in neighbouring countries. Of the two monsoons, the southwest monsoon from May to October brings some rain and wind. The northeast monsoon, from November to April, is the dry season with very little wind.

The temperature varies little with an annual average daily maximum of 30.4°C and the minimum at 25.9°C. Maldives, sittting astride the equator has over 2,800 hours of sunshine, an average of about 8 hrs a day.

Over the years though, the people have found their own identity, speak their own language and have formed traditions unique to the country. With their eclectic origins, the Maldivians make at attractive people. They are friendly and charming.

It is believed that the first settlers of Maldives were the Dravidian people from nearby coasts, most probably fisherman and navigators from India and Sri Lanka. However, there are signs of Arab and east Asian inhabitants mostly in the Southernmost atolls. The islands were located on the trade route allowing the traveller to stop by, hence civilization began.

The first settlers followed Buddhism. This continued for centuries until late 12th century AD.
Maldives accepted Islam in 1153 with help of a Moroccan traveller named Abul Barakaat who, according to a legend, helped to draw off a spirit using his knowledge of the Quran.

Although governed as an independent Islamic sultanate from 1153 to 1968, the Maldives was a British protectorate from 1887 until July 25, 1965. In 1953, there was a brief, abortive attempt to form a republic, but the sultanate was re-imposed. In 1959, objecting to Mr. Ibrahim Nasir's (who then was the President of the first Republic) centralism, the inhabitants of the three southernmost atolls protested against the government. They formed the United Suvadive Republic, a short lived state, and elected Mr. Abdullah Afeef as president and Hithadhoo from the Southern-most atoll as the capital of this republic. This state was then recognised by the United Kingdom.

The official name of the country was changed from Maldive Islands to the Republic of Maldives over time. Tourism began to be developed on the archipelago in the early 1970s.

The Harbour specialises, among many other culinary delights, in Maldivian game fish, innumerable seafood delicacies, the finest in Italian pastas and other international cuisines.

As a classic island-beach bar, the Sand Bar's modern facilities blend well with the tropical atmosphere. The sand floor and island ambience of the bar is ideal for customers to enjoy one of our many tropical cocktails or any other beverage that suits their fancy.

The Sand Bar is designed with fun in mind and we assure you that our guests would have a wonderful time either with our top-notch karaoke facilities, live band or discotheque evenings.

The Sand Bar is open from 0730 hours in the morning till late at night.

The Gallery, consisting of three spacious pods, is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and is the main restaurant at Bandos. It usually has elaborate buffet setups during mealtimes and although open to all guests, the Gallery specializes in catering to those who have pre-booked their meals.

Guests who have pre-booked their meal arrangements are also welcome to patronize our other restaurants and are eligible for discounts at both the Harbour Restaurant and Sea Breeze Cafe (Coffee Shop).

Aptly named, the recently commissioned Sea Breeze Café is situated at the edge of the water where customers can lounge on the large outdoor over-water deck and enjoy the breathtaking view of the lagoon while relaxing in the gentle breeze.

Open round the clock, the restaurant offers a wide variety of dining options from a la carte offerings such as spaghetti or even authentic Indian curries to alternative fast-food fixes such as pizza and hamburgers.

Situated near our world class diving facility, the Sundowners Bar is so named because it is the best place to watch breathtaking Maldivian sunsets. The enormous sundeck allows you to watch the beautiful stars in the night or the blueness of the sky in the day and makes you unwind and relax. Thanks to the central location in the southern part of North Malé’ Atoll, we can offer you a variety of over 40 different dive sites which include all the well known highlights in the area such as the Banana Reef, Barracuda Giri, Victory Wreck, Paradise Rock, Rainbow Giri, Lion’s Head, Old Shark Point, and of course seasonal Manta Points like Lankan Reef and Furana North from September to December or Boduhithi Thila and Rasfaree from January to April.

Popular statistics have it that the average Maldivian consumes an average of 75 kilograms of tuna annually. Our love for fishing should then come as no surprise, and Bandos is proud to share the Maldivian flair for fishing with our guests, particularly the art of baitless fishing. One needn’t be a professional as our team includes professional fishermen who will be able to assist you throughout the course of the entire trip. Geared towards this end is our state of the art vessel. A Prowler equipped with a fish finder, global positioning systems, radar and so forth.

Different types of fish are caught depending on the monsoon. The country experiences two main seasons, the South West Monsoon and the North East Monsoon. The South West Monsoon, which usually starts in May and continues until August, is the rainy season. However, given that these coral isles have an abundance of marine fauna, there hardly is a time when a trip fails to yield a good catch.

Hop on board a local mechanized 'Dhoni' and sail away across the North Male’ Atoll to explore the different types of Islands in the area. Snorkel or swim and take a nap while you top up that tan in our tropical paradise. Discover a local island and see Maldivians at work and experience their island lifestyle. 

Visit a local souvenir shop; buy something for you to remember your the trip by, before we land on our own picnic island for lunch. The full day tour includes the picnic lunch on the beach on our very own uninhabited island of Kuda Bandos (Little Bandos). Half day tours start after breakfast and we return to Bandos for lunch.

A shout away from the main island of Bandos is the uninhabited island of Kuda Bandos (literally meaning small Bandos) ideal for a private picnic on the beach or merely enjoying the sunset after a full day of snorkelling the reef or swimming in the clear blue lagoon.

Open throughout the week except Fridays, Saturdays and other public holidays, Kuda Bandos is the penultimate Robinson Crusoe experience.

The Male’ Tour is unique. Male’ must rank amongst the smallest capital cities of the world. Explore the streets of this tiny and unique island city through a guided tour by experienced local tour guides. Watch the fisherman unload their catch at the bustling local fish market or wander the aisles of the colourful Maldivian consumable products at the local market. Learn about the history and culture of the Maldives by visiting places of interest in the city. Although Male’ is not the shopping capital of the world, you will find plenty of enthusiastic vendors keen to show you around their souvenir shops.

Sightseeing & Shopping

The Maldives is a country rich in culture, history and tradition. And in order to experience life as it is known in these islands, Bandos offers you a variety of excursions to both the capital and adjoining islands.

One of the most densely populated islands anywhere in the world, with over 103,000 people on a 2.5 square mile island, Malé, the financial, administrative and cultural capital has a number of historic and religious sites that merit visiting. Equally interesting would be to take a walk in the narrow lanes and witness the hustle and bustle as shopkeepers, fishermen, civil servants and businessmen all go about their daily business. The fish market on the waterfront and the local fruit and vegetable market are also places that would prove to be interesting.

Malé is an island definitely worth visiting. The Island Hopping excursions available from Bandos will allow you to visit a local inhabited island and nearby resort islands to give you a taste of what island life is like in the midst of the Indian Ocean.

Your visit to Bandos Island Resort and Spa is not complete without trying your hand at the local pass time activity- FISHING. This is definitely a night to remember full of scenes and memories. Bait your hook, drop your line direct from a 'Dhoni' to the reef and hope for a nibble as you watch the spectacular colors of sunset and ocean waves lap the surrounding islands.

After 2 hours of fishing for your own supper, we prepare a delicious barbecue on the beach of Kuda Bandos. While you are waiting to barbecue your catch of the evening our staff will entertain you with spectacular 'bodu beru' (local music with drums, rhythm and dance). After dinner you can just sit and relax with your loved ones on the white powder sandy beach to watch the glittering bonfire on the shore.

Please remember reefs are fragile ecosystems. Please do not stand, walk on the corals or reef. Do not try to take any souvenirs from the underwater world. It is not safe to remove corals as it may be even poisonous and may hurt your hands or feet.

At Bandos we think of making your holiday as hassle free as possible, and for those families travelling with young children the Child Care Centre and Kids Club will prove to be a blessing. Now you can enjoy your holiday comfortable in the knowledge that your children are in the capable care of our professional child minders and baby sitters.

The facilities are free of charge and the staff of Kids Club provides baby-sitting services free of charge, for children between 8 months to 12 years, between 0900hrs to 1700hrs, although a small charge is levied after 1700hrs. The Kids Club is equipped with a nursery full of toys and a large playground outside so that even your children would be guaranteed an enjoyable holiday experience.

The "Kuda Bandos Sunset Wedding" features a taste of a traditional island ceremony, with a sunset boat ride, unique cultural costumes, Maldivian drums and local style decoration. The ceremony is held on the beach of an uninhabited island called Kuda Bandos followed by a private cruise for the newlyweds on a Dhoni (Maldivian boat). After which, enjoy a romantic private dinner set on the beach of Kuda Bandos. This is a uniquely tropical Maldivian experience.

The water sports centre at Bandos is staffed with professionals who are highly skilled in their craft and are fluent in English, Japanese and German. Some of our most preferred activities include snorkelling, windsurfing, catamaran sailing, water skiing, parasailing, banana boat riding, wakeboard, knee board, fun tubes and canoeing. What’s important to note here is that this is not an exhaustive list and the possibilities are most certainly unlimited. The Water Sports Centre here at Bandos also offers top notch catamaran and windsurfing facilities, while boasting of quality equipment such as Hifly, North-Sails and Topcats.

You can fly to Maldives and arrive at our Male’ International Airport. Several scheduled and charter flights operate direct to the Maldives on a regular basis. Flights originate from Austria, France, Germany, Holland, India, Italy, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, U.A.E. and the UK.

3.    How do I get to Bandos from the Male' International Airport?
From Male’ International Airport you will be received by Bandos Airport Representative who will guide you to your Speedboat transfer.

4.    How far is Bandos from the Male' International Airport?
Bandos is located 7 kilometres away from the Male’ International Airport. It is a 15 minute breathtaking ride to reach the island by your speedboat transfer where you will get to see the spectacular views of the Maldives. 

5.    What are the accommodation types available in Bandos?
We have 103 Standard Rooms, 48 Deluxe Rooms, 24 Garden Villas, 48 Jacuzzi Beach Villas and 2 Water Villas available in Bandos.

6.    What is the maximum occupancy per room?
We can accommodate 3 adults or 2 adult plus 1 child (extra bed/crib) in Standard Rooms, Garden Villas and Jacuzzi Beach Villas. Our more spacious Deluxe Rooms and Water Villas can accommodate 3 adults or 2 adults plus 2 children (2 extra beds/crib).

7.    What in-room facilities are available?
All rooms are air-conditioned and include attached bathroom, hot/cold water, sitting area, tea/coffee making facilities, mini bar, IDD telephone, cable TV, hair dryer, adapter, double bed or single beds and electornic safe.

Our own dive centre; Dive Bandos is a fully equipped centre with professional multilingual staff. We offer a large array of diving opportunities for both beginners and qualified divers.
Situated in North Male’ Atoll, we are minutes away from some truly amazing dive sites. Our house reef is known to be the best in the North Male’ Atoll.

14.    Will I be able to see Manta rays, Dolphins, Turtles, Whale sharks during my stay?
There are many opportunities to visit a variety of different dive sites during your stay with us. Mantas, silver jack, yellow snapper, grouper, trigger fish, banner fish, oriental sweet lips, black tip reef shark, turtles, napoleon wrasses, fusiliers, surgeon fish and eagle rays are common ones found on our house reef together with schools of common fish swimming around. The best time to see manta rays in the North Malé Atoll is from January to April. We conduct trips to see the seasonal creatures as well as to other dive sites close by.

15.    What are the spa facilities available in Bandos?
The Anggerik Spa is the sanctuary for senses itself. The beautiful garden shines and the water sparkles under the sun while private resort spa serves your senses in the spectacular treatment rooms it has. You can pre-book or book after arrival.

16.    What are the recreational activities on the island?
Our health and fitness centre, the Paradise Club, offers tennis, squash, badminton, pool, table football, table tennis and there is a free of charge sauna and steam room. The club lounge offers books and TV while the club pool is just the place for a rest after some exercise in the club gymnasium.

17.    What excursions are done in Bandos?
Our dolphin cruise, night fishing with a beach BBQ (at Kuda Bandos) and a private sand bank picnic are not to be missed. Other excursions include snorkelling trips to nearby sites, full day and half day island hopping, Male' tour and submarine dives.

18.    What are the dining facilities available on Bandos?
Our Gallery Restaurant is well-known for its marvelous meals served buffet style. We have 3 other food outlets which includes our 24 hour Sea Breeze Cafe' serving a la carte menu, Sundowners Bar which serves seafood, snacks specialties and dinner under the stars. Our Harbour Restaurant is for fine dining.

19.    Do you cater for people with special dietary requirements?
Of course! Please inform us when you make your reservation and we will cater to your dietary requirements throughout your stay.

20.    Do you have a shop on Bandos?
We have our boutique plus souvenir shop (Blue Coral Shop) as well as a jewellery shop. You can find necessity items, ideal wear for the stay and Maldivian style items in our Blue Coral Shop.

21.    Is it possible to get married on Bandos?
Yes. We offer a ceremony on the beach. Our sunset wedding package includes a wedding in a Maldivian traditional style. Please refer to our Wedding package.

22.    Is there a minimum night stay policy at Bandos?

During the Christmas and New Year period, we have a 1 week minimum policy, other than that we don't have a minimum night policy.

23.    How do I pay for the hotel when booking directly?
Upon receiving our confirmation mail, a pro forma invoice will be sent for you to pay the advanced deposit. Payment can be made by credit card, telegraphic transfer and bank transfer. We accept AMEX, VISA, MASTERCARD and JCB.

24.    Do I have to pay each time I purchase an item or receive a service?
No. You sign for each purchase or service and typically, payment is made when checking out.
